‘Lancashire v. Sussex’ 1877. Official and early single sided scorecard for the match played at Old Trafford, 2nd- 4th August 1877, with complete printed scores. Lancashire batted first and made 345 with contributions from debutant A.G. Steel (87), Kershaw (66), Rowley (55) etc. Fillery took 5/50 for Sussex. In reply, Sussex made 241 (H. Phillips 79), and, following on, were dismissed for 73, giving Lancashire victory by an innings and 31 runs. Lancashire’s Watson took ten wickets in the match. Printer unknown. 4.75”x6”. Ex Roger Mann collection. Two horizontal folds, minor soiling, otherwise in very good condition.
This was a game of debuts. Most notably was the 18 year old Alan Gilbert Steel (Lancashire 1877-1893, England 13 Tests) who went on to play in the first ever Test match in England, against Australia in 1880, in 1884 scored the first ever Test century at Lord’s, and captained England on four occasions, all against Australia, winning three and drawing one. Other debutants were H. Wall who played only three first-class matches, all in 1877, R. Pilling (Lancashire & England 1881-1889, 8 Tests), R.M. Turnbull (Sussex 1877-1879, 2 matches), and W. Francis (Sussex 1877-1879, 7 matches).
