‘Somerset v. Surrey. August 13, 14 & 15, 1891’. Large early original mono photograph of the Somerset team seated and standing in rows on the steps of the pavilion at Taunton, the players wearing cricket attire and assorted caps and blazers. Printed titles and players’ names to mount borders. Players are Hewett (Captain), L.C.H. Palairet, Woods, Tyler, Young, R.C.N. Palairet, Hill, Newton, Roe, Challen and Nichols. The photograph, with official stamps to verso for John Chaffin & Son of Taunton & Yeovil, measures approx. 11.5”x8”, laid to official photographer’s mount, overall 13.25”x11” with modern mount overlay. An excellent image in very good condition.
The 1891 season was Somerset’s first playing in the County Championship with first-class status. Somerset (130 & 331/9 dec.) beat Surrey (154 & 241) by 130 runs, Sammy Woods taking nine wickets in the match for Somerset.
