Australian tour to North America 1896. Rare and early original mono photograph of the quartet of South Australian members of the touring party, Joe Darling, George Giffen, Clem Hill and Ernest Jones. The players standing and seated on the pavilion steps wearing cricket attire and tour blazers for the tour match v Gentlemen of Philadelphia at Germantown Cricket Club Ground, Manheim, Philadelphia, 18th- 21st September 1896. The photograph, by H. Parker Rolfe of Philadelphia, measures 7”x9.25”, laid to official photographer’s mount, overall 9”x11”, the mount with gilt to edges. A beautiful image in very good condition.
The Australians (192 & 180) beat the Philadelphians (123 & 126) by 123 runs. Darling (69) and Giffen (62) were the top scorers in the match, Giffen also took 5/67 in the Philadelphians first innings.
