M.C.C. tour of Australia 1936/37. Large and impressive sepia photograph of the ship R.M.S. Orion in harbour in 1936. Signed to the skyline of the photograph by the M.C.C. touring party in black ink by all eighteen members of the touring party including the manager, Captain R. Howard. Players’ signatures are Allen (Captain), Robins, Farnes, Ames, Hammond, Fagg (signed twice), Verity, Barnett, Sims, Leyland, Voce, Fishlock, Duckworth, Copson, Hardstaff, Worthington and Wyatt. The photograph measures 11.5”x9.5” with official label to verso, ‘New Orient Liner Orion’. Very minor creasing and odd surface mark, otherwise in very good condition. Nice signatures.
’Gubby’ Allen was chosen as captain to placate the Australians following the Bodyline series of 1932/33. Despite England winning the first two Tests, they lost the last three. Hammond topped the batting averages scoring 1242 runs at an average of 59.14 with five centuries, Voce was the pick of the England bowlers, but disappointed in the last few Tests.
