‘Hambledon: The Men and the Myths’. John Goulstone. Roger Heavens Cambridge 2001. Special Edition in quarter blue calf and cloth, gilt title to spine, in slipcase. Only twenty five numbered copies produced, this being number six, signed by the author. Tipped in opposite the limitation page is a 16pp booklet titled ‘The Publisher Regrets’. Not authorised by Goulstone, this comprises a list of incorrect captions, errata, and an extended index, the original considered ‘unsatisfactory for a book of this importance’. In an accompanying envelope is a copy of a damning review of the book by Ashley Mote, for Bodyline Books in 2002, who heavily criticises both the author and publisher. Also included is a copy of a typed letter, ‘A Response to A. Mote’ by Goulstone which was never published, in which Goulstone claims that his original text ‘was surrepticiously [sic] altered and added to by the publisher Heavens’. A scarce package covering an unusual cricket publishing dispute. Very good condition.
