Derek John ‘Jackie’ McGlew. Natal & South Africa 1947-1967. Two page handwritten letter in ink on McGlew’s personal letterhead, dated 10th May 1996. Writing to ‘Dear Don’ in a letter with good cricket and other content, McGlew opens with a despairing description of the horror of the recent mass killings in Port Arthur, Tasmania. He then moves to sporting matters, looking forward to the F.A. Cup Final at Wembley between the ‘Reds [Liverpool’ and the ‘Red Devils [Manchester United]’ and will be supporting Liverpool ‘for no rational reason’ (United won 1-0). He also mentions the upcoming boxing match between Philip Holliday ‘an exceptionally good boxer by South African standards’ and Jeff Fenech. On South African cricket, he describes Shaun Pollock as ‘genuinely a “super” star... Hansie Cronje, as good a captain as he may be, should stop playing yo-yo’s in the batting order’ and that Kallis should be the ‘permanent number three’ and goes on to list his preferred batting order.
