‘The Yorkshire Evening News. Sutcliffe Shilling Fund Dinner’ 1925. Official menu for the Dinner held at the Griffin Hotel, Leeds on the 23rd May 12t to honour Sutcliffe’s three consecutive centuries in a row against Australia on the 1924/25 Ashes tour. The menu signed by many Yorkshire players, cricketers and guests who attended the event. Signatures in ink and in pencil include Sutcliffe, Robert ‘Bobby’ Peel, William Blackburn, E. Oldroyd, Leyland, Macaulay, Dolphin, Holmes, Waddington, Jack Hubble (Kent), Fred Coe (Mayor of Pudsey), F.C. Macaskie (Chairman of the Yorkshire Newspaper Group) and many more of the guest speakers. Thirty seven signatures in total. Ink signature of R.J. Derbyshire to the top of the menu cover. Some soiling, wear and creasing to the menu otherwise in good condition
Sutcliffe had an extraordinary Ashes series in 1924/25. In the five Tests he scored 734 runs with four centuries, highest 176, at an average of 81.55. Despite this, Australia won the series 4-1.
