M.C.C. tour of Australia 1924/25. Original mono photograph of the S.S. Ormonde, the ship which took the M.C.C. team to Australia in 1924. The photograph, laid down to photographers mount, has printed title on strip ‘M.C.C. 1924-5’ to lower border. Signed to side and top borders by all eighteen members of the touring party including the Manager, Toone. Players’ signatures are A.E.R. Gilligan (Captain), J.W.H.T. Douglas, R. Kilner, J.L. Bryan, A.P.F. Chapman, H. Sutcliffe, J.B. Hobbs, A.P. Freeman, W.W. Whysall, M. Tate, E.H. Hendren, J.W. Hearne, H. Howell, R.K. Tyldesley, F.E. Woolley, A. Sandham and H. Strudwick. The photograph of the ship measures 6”x4”, mounted, framed and glazed in contemporary frame, overall 11.75”x10”. Slight browning to image otherwise in good condition. Rare.
Australian won the series by four tests to one despite some excellent opening partnerships from Hobbs and Sutcliffe. Sutcliffe topped the batting averages scoring 1250 runs at 69.44 with five centuries, two of them in Tests. Tate topped the bowling averages with 77 wickets at 19.01.
