‘The Grace Family’. W.G. Grace in the West Gloucestershire team of 1866. Good very early original sepia photograph of the West Gloucestershire team that played Knole Park on the 12th and 13th July 1866. The team are depicted in cricket apparel and are seated on the grass in front of an oak tree with the ground and tents to background. The photograph features all five of the Grace brothers, William Gilbert, Henry, Edward Mills, Alfred and Fred and their father Dr H.M. Grace plus two of their cousins Alfred Pocock and W.J.Pocock the players featured are H.W. Barber, H. Grunning, F. Baker, and R. Brotherhood, some of whom went on to play for the full Gloucestershire team when it was formed in 1870. The father is on the back row wearing the top hat, four of the brothers are on the second row, W.G. to the extreme left, no beard as yet! and Fred is in the middle of the front row. The photograph measures 7.5” x 4.75” and is mounted to original photographers mount which measures 8”x5”. To the reverse of the mount id handwritten ‘The Grace Family taken at Knole Park, Almondsbury near Bristol, about 1867. The Property of J.A. Hamilton, 11 Broad Street, Staple Hill Bristol. The photograph with some wear to edges and corners otherwise in good condition considering its age.
