Thomas Walter ‘Tom’ Hayward. Surrey & England 1893-1914. Excellent extra large ‘Imperial’ size cabinet sepia card photograph of Hayward standing, full length, in batting pose at the wicket wearing Surrey county cap. Very nicely signed in black ink to the photograph ‘Yours Truly, T. Hayward. The photograph by Herbert Tear of Clapham Road, London c1899. The photograph is laid down to photographers card mount with photographer’s name to lower left hand border and measures approximately 7.5”x13”. Gilt to all edges. Some wear and marks to image some wear to corners and mount otherwise in good condition. An excellent image and a rarely seen large cabinet card especially in this signed form
Tom Hayward played for Surrey and England between the 1890s and the outbreak of World War I. He was primarily an opening batsman, noted especially for the quality of his off-drive. Neville Cardus wrote that he ‘was amongst the most precisely technical and most prolific batsmen of any time in the annals of cricket’. He was only the second batsman to reach the landmark of 100 first-class centuries, following W.G. Grace. In the 1906 English season he scored 3,518 runs, a record aggregate since surpassed only by Denis Compton and Bill Edrich in 1947. He played thirty five Tests for England and toured Australia on three occasions
