Australia 1909. ‘The Scarborough Cricket Festival’. Four album pages containing fifteen ink signatures of the Australian touring team of 1909 who played the Earl of Londesborough’s XI on the 9th-11th September, twelve ink signatures of the Gentlemen and eleven ink signatures of the South who played against each other on the 6th-8th September. The signatures on four album pages and some have signatures to the backs of the pages. The signatures of the Australian of 1909 are Noble, Laver, Carter, Macartney, Whitty, Hopkins, O’Connor, Ransford, Cotter, McAlister, Armstrong, Carkeek, Hartigan, Bardsley and Gregory. The twelve of the signatures to one page and three to another. The twelve signatures of the Gentlemen are Leveson-Gower, Lord Hawke, Hutchings, Schwarz, Douglas, Greswell, Spooner, Carr, Fane, M.C. Bird, Day and W.S. Bird, eight to one page and four to the back of the Australian page. The eleven signatures of the Players are W. Rhodes, Hobbs, Denton, Tydesley, King, Hirst, Relf, Thompson, Newstead, Haigh and Hunter, all on one page. To further complicate this there are also signatures from the time who were not playing in these matches and later signatures of players signed to pages and on paper pieces laid down to the pages. Other signatures in both ink and pencil include C.P. Buckenham, Sandham, Dolphin, Greenwood, Wood, Vic Richardson, Peach, Sutcliffe, Astill etc. Please see the images supplied.
