George Herbert Hirst. Yorkshire & England 1891-1929. ‘Death of Hedley Verity, Yorkshire & England in Italy, 31st July 1943’. Two page handwritten letter from Hirst writing from 33 Glebe Street, Huddersfield to Mr Verity on the 7th October 1944. ‘Much as I would like, I am sorry I am unable to accept your kind invitation to come to Rawdon on October 13th’. He goes onto explain he has not been well due to an attack of shingles. He goes onto say ‘Anyone who came into contact with Hedley had but one thought he may be a good bowler but I am conscious he is a fine man. I am so glad I knew him so well and will always cherish his memory so long as I live’. Hirst explains he is enclosing a postal order to help in a small way’. Signed ‘Yours sincerely George Hirst’. Hirst’s sending a postal order may well be due to the Hedley Verity memorial match, H. Sutcliffe’s Yorkshire XI v J Appleyard’s XI played on 3rd September 1944. The match was played to raised funds for a bed at Leeds Infirmary in Verity’s memory and this may well have been Hirst’s donation to the fund
