Ranjitsinhji. ‘Nawanagar and its Critics being a critical examination and review of “The Inside View of the Administration of the State of Nawanagar of Prince Ranji (Published by the Secretary of the Indian States’ Peoples’ Conference)’. Published by the Nawanagar State, The Times of India Press, Bombay 1929. 213pp book in stiffened card wrappers, blue cloth spine. Compiled to defend the princely state of Nawanagar, and counter allegations of mismanagement and autocracy levelled against its ruler, Prince Ranjitsinhji. Does not appear to be listed in Padwick. No cricket content but of historical interest relating to the great cricketer Ranji’s time as ruler of the State of Nawanagar. Worm damage to the majority of pages, otherwise in good condition.
The Indian States’ Peoples’ Conference had issued a pamphlet criticising Ranji’s rule. The Nawangar State reacted by publishing this title as an official rebuttal to the ‘pernicious propaganda’ made in the context of 1920s British India when the political climate was particularly tense and the autocratic rule of princes was increasingly challenged by nationalist and democratic movements.
