‘Ranjitsinhji 3d Cigar’. Large heavy cast iron cigar cutter, the metal top with portrait of Ranjitsinhji, head and shoulders, wearing cap, blazer and tie with the wording ‘’Ranjitsinhji 3d Cigar’ to side. Wind-up mechanical mechanism beneath. ‘Patent number. Feb 19 1889’ to base, with grooved match striker to side. Made by the Erie Specialty Co, Erie, Pennsylvania USA. Workings rusted and broken. Wear and loss of colour to the wording and image of Ranjitsinhji otherwise in good original condition. The cigar cutter measures 6”x4.5” on the top and 6.5”x5” at the base and stands approximately 3.75” tall. A very rare cigar cutter endorsed by one of the famous cricketing names of the period
It has been noted that other Cigar Cutter’s made by Erie Specialty Co in 1889 (not with Ranjitsinhji’s endorsement) are described as Countertop Store Display cutters. David Frith suggests the cutter was produced around 1897-98 when Ranji was at the height of his powers and was a very popular member of Stoddart’s 1897/98 team in Australia
