‘Death’s Doings; consisting of numerous original compositions, in prose and verse, the friendly contributions of various writers; principally intended as illustrations of thirty copper-plates, designed and etched by R. Dagley, author of “Select Gems from the Antique” &c. Second edition with considerable additions’. London 1827, published in two volumes. Both volumes are exquisitely rebound in modern full brown morocco, raised bands to spines and decorative leaves stamped at the ends of the bands. Gilt titles to spines and to page edges. Original decorative paper wrappers for both volumes retained. Binding by W.H. Smith. Volume one comprises pages 1-224 with fifteen plates (lacking one, p51 ‘The Scroll’), and Volume two pages 225-466 complete with fourteen plates. Contents include ‘The Game of Life; or Death Among the Cricketers’, a poem by S. Maunder, with an etching ‘The Cricketer’ by Dagley p69, ‘Verses in praise of Cricket’ by the Rev M. Cotton p72, and a prose piece ‘Death and the Cricketer’ by Barnard Batwell p73. This second edition contains sixty more pages, six additional plates and an expanded cricket content. Volume one has a six page section at the end comprising press reports of the first edition, and states ‘The additions to “Death’s Doings” having been so considerable as to swell the Work to a bulk which was not anticipated when the second Edition was begun, it has been deemed advisable to divide it into two volumes. For this purpose a new Vignette Title-page has been engraved for the second volume’. Padwick 6970. Very good condition. Qty 2.
