Henry Rose worked on the Daily Express and was one of the most flamboyant of journalists and he would drive to games in his Jaguar. Only one of the United players had a car at the time, and that was a Morris Minor. He was often very controversial in his reporting of the matches. In February 1958, Rose travelled with the Manchester United team to Belgrade, Yugoslavia, for a European Cup match against Red Star Belgrade. On the return flight, the plane refuelled in Munich, Germany, where it tragically crashed on a snow slush covered runway on February 6, 1958. Rose was one of 23 passengers who died in the crash. Along with eight Manchester United players and three club officials, a total of eight prominent British journalists, including Rose, Alf Clarke, and Don Davies were killed. Henry Rose was such a big character that over 4000 people went to his funeral, and taxi-drivers in Manchester refused to take payment for anyone going to or from it.
