In a low scoring match, scheduled for three days but completed in two, Surrey batted first scoring 79, Tom Emmett (6/38) and Allen Hill (4/32) sharing the wickets. In reply Yorkshire could muster only 54 (James Southerton 6/24 and James Street 4/30). Surrey’s second innings saw them creep up to 84, Emmett and Hill again doing the damage and Emmett ending with match figures of 12 wickets for 84 runs. Yorkshire then reached their target with some ease, ending on 113 for the loss of only two batsmen to win by eight wickets.

Edward ‘Ted’ Pooley was suspended by Surrey for allegedly taking a bet during this match. His career was clouded by his drinking and gambling exploits leading to his arrest on the 1876/77 tour to New Zealand and Australia, so missing the inaugural Test match against Australia. He died in poverty in 1907.
