David Denton. Yorkshire & England 1894-1920. ‘David Denton’s Benefit. Yorkshire v Lancashire, Headingley Ground, Leeds. August 5th,6th and 7th [1907]. Original hanging cardboard poster, printed navy blue and white background advertising the Benefit match ‘All Lovers of Cricket are cordially invited to co-operate in order to make the Benefit a great success’. It advertises seat prices, collecting books, hanging cards and cheap tickets with names and address of County Committee members to the lower third of the poster. Some loss to top right hand corner and wear, damage and slight loss to the lower border otherwise in good condition for its age. Blue and white threaded hanging cord to the top of the poster. 14.5”x22”. Sold with a further smaller hanging poster for the game with similar title to top with a central image of Denton wearing Yorkshire cap and blazer. This has a subscription list below for supporters of Denton to fill in. Very minor loss to lower left hand corner otherwise in very good condition. 12.5”x20”. Qty 2
In a low scoring match, Yorkshire won the match by nine wickets, Rhodes was the star of the show taking 11 wickets in the match. Denton made 3 in the first innings but was 25 not out when Yorkshire scored the winning runs, the contest yielded nearly £2,000 for Denton’s Benefit.
