Hubert Ashton. Essex 1921-1939. The Chaps Cricket Club striped cricket blazer 1923. The mid blue blazer, by Sidney Smith of Cambridge, with vertical yellow stripes was worn by Ashton. Little is known of the Chaps Cricket Club except that it was a very exclusive and founded by Ashton and his friend Dick Stokes. Some fading to the colours of the blazer and some wear otherwise in good condition. In one of the pockets is a handwritten team list presumably written by Ashton and a colourful tie
Ashton won blues at Cambridge 1920-1922 and played twenty one matches for Essex. He played football for Clapton Orient and Bristol Rovers. He was MP for Chelmsford and President of the M.C.C. in 1960. He was knighted in 1959
