‘Winning Hand?’. November 1946. Large and impressive original pen and ink caricature/ cartoon newspaper artwork, highlighted with colour, for ‘The Herald’ newspaper by artist Samuel Wells. The cartoon depicts the Australian (kangaroo) and England (lion) selectors playing cards, the cards being Test players. The Australian selectors are showing their hand with images of Bradman, Hassett, Miller etc, the lion is looking concerned as he looks at his hand. On the floor is the ‘Lucky coin for Don to win the toss’. The cartoon, signed by Wells, measures 18”x13”. Dated to Herald label 20th November 1946. Excellent image. Good condition
Samuel Wells born in 1885 worked drawing sporting cartoons for the Melbourne Punch, Herald and The Age and also worked for the Daily Dispatch in the UK
