‘The Test’ England v Australia 1909. Excellent large original pen and ink artwork by artist ‘A.S.M.’, showing the two opposing Captain’s Archie Maclaren of England and Monty Noble of Australia depicted running in a cross country race, both wearing athletics attire with spiked boots but wearing their Test caps on their heads, Maclaren, who has a large lion emblazoned to his running vest, appears to be in the lead with Noble following, two flags to the background displaying ‘1st’ and 2nd’. Title ‘The Test’ handwritten to the top border and to lower border the inscription ‘Maclaren: Come on Noble my boy! Make a race of it!’. Signed to lower right hand corner by the artist. An excellent piece of cricket artwork. Nicely mounted, framed and glazed in a simple black frame. Overall 20”x24”. Minor faults to the image, minor blemishes to the surface, some wrinkling and slight darkening to minor area otherwise in good condition
It is assumed that this was drawn after the first Test played at Birmingham which England won comfortably by ten wickets. Blythe and Hirst doing the damage in a low scoring match. However Australia came back winning the following two Tests and with the last two Tests drawn won the Ashes!!
