‘Lord Londesborough’s XI 1875’. Very early original sepia photograph of eleven players seated and standing in rows in casual pose, spectators in the background. The photograph measures 11.5”x7.5, laid to mount with handwritten title in ink to lower mount border. Players appear to include E. Lockwood, Hicks, Ulyett, Iddison, Pinder etc. Match, ground and photographer unknown. Overall “18.5”x13”. Some ageing and fading to the photograph, staining to mount otherwise in good condition
The team featured is almost certainly that of the newly formed Yorkshire United Eleven, which often played under the title of Lord Londesborough’s XI when playing on one of his grounds. Londesborough sponsored a match v M.C.C. at Scarborough in 1875, a precursor to the first Scarborough Festival which took place the following year in 1876

Lord Londesborough was patron of cricket and President of M.C.C. in 1876
