Herbert Sutcliffe. Yorkshire & England 1919-1945. Large red photograph album with title ‘Sutcliffe’ in gilt to front cover, comprising a very nicely compiled collection of over thirty original (plus some copy) photographs relating to Sutcliffe’s playing career, his childhood and family (including his son, Billy), holidays, portraits, his daughter’s wedding etc. and other ephemera. Cricket related images include two signed photographs, one an original mono press photograph of Sutcliffe bowling in the nets in 1930 nicely signed in ink to the photograph by Sutcliffe, and an original mono photograph of Sutcliffe seated in a wheelchair with Geoff Boycott and Len Hutton to either side on the occasion of Boycott reaching his hundredth first class century in the Test match against Australia in 1977, signed by all three. Others include an original sepia press photograph of a youthful Sutcliffe in batting pose wearing his Yorkshire cap, dated 26th June 1924, bowling at The Oval v Surrey 1938, coaching, playing golf during wartime, attending official functions in later years etc. Other ephemeral items include typed correspondence with Geoffrey Howard, Secretary of Lancashire C.C.C., and a typescript with annotations by Sutcliffe of an introduction for a book on the centenary of cricket at Old Trafford to be published in 1957, in which Sutcliffe recounts his memories of playing at Old Trafford. Also a typescript for a speech and typed letters of reference from suppliers and manufacturers of sports equipment including Stuart Surridge, William Sykes, and Myers Hall relating to Sutcliffe’s work as a buyer and salesman of sporting goods in the 1920s. An excellent selection relating to the life and career of the great Yorkshire and England batsman. Very good condition.
