‘The All England Cricket Matches for 1848’. Sheffield v. England. Early small original single sided printed scorecard with complete printed scores for the match played at Hyde Park, Sheffield, 28th- 30th August 1848. The sixteen of Sheffield elected to bat first and were dismissed for 118, top scorer was H. Sampson (35), Alfred Mynn taking 7/28 off 30 (four ball) overs for All England. In reply the All England Eleven were bowled out for only 58 (George Parr 30). Sheffield then reached 77 in their second innings, W. Martingell taking 8/27. Set 138 to win All England were bowled out for 82 (R.T. King 20), Sheffield winning by 55 runs. The Sheffield team included three who played first-class cricket, M.J. Ellison (Yorkshire & Nottinghamshire 1849-1855), T. Hunt (Yorkshire & Lancashire 1845-1851), and G.H. Wright (Yorkshire 1849-1855). The All England Eleven were without Fuller Pilch and Hayward for this match, and comprised W. Pilch, Martingell, T. Box, G. Parr, Mynn, N. Felix, C.H. Hoare, R.T. King, W. Clarke, J. Dean and E. Hinkly. Printed and published on the ground by J. & F. Lillywhite, with text printed to the right edge with details of scorecards ‘of all the Northern Matches’ available by mail order. 4.5” square. Horizontal split with tape repair to verso. Some age toning, otherwise in good condition.
