Sussex v. Kent 1850. Early small original single sided printed scorecard with scores showing the ‘State of the Game 1 1/2 o’Clock’ on the second day’s play in the match played at C.H. Gausden’s (Royal Brunswick) Ground, Hove, 17th- 19th June 1850. The scorecard depicts Sussex’s complete first innings of 182, E. Bushby top scorer with 49, and Kent’s score standing at 110/5. Kent went on to reach 207, Fuller Pilch making 41, T.M. Adams 39, and Nicholas Felix 31, with John Wisden taking five wickets for Sussex. In their second innings Sussex were bowled out for 82 (J. Challen 34, Martingell taking six wickets), and Kent knocked off the required runs, reaching 61 to win by five wickets, E. Martin ending 31no. Printed for G. Mant by Phillips & Co., Poplar-place. Originally from the family collection of C. Hammond (assumed to by C.J. Hammond, Sussex 1841-1854) who did not play in this game. 3”x4.5”. Very good condition.
Despite being a useful batsman, Charles Hammond played only forty games in his first-class career for Sussex supposedly due to his poor fielding.
