‘Hastings and St. Leonards Grand Cricket Week. Gentlemen v Players’ 1889. Early original 12pp ‘Randle’s Authorised Scorecard’ with complete printed scores for the match played at the Central Recreation Ground, Hastings, 16th- 18th September 1889. In a closely fought match, the Players batted first and scored 179, Albert Ward top scorer with 50. In reply, the Gentlemen, captained by W.G. Grace, reached 226 with contributions of 41 from Kingsmill Key, Herbert Pigg (35) and Hylton Philipson (25no) putting on 42 for the last wicket. There were 36 extras. The Players were then bowled out for 119 in their second innings (William Gunn 40, Pigg taking 7/55 giving him match figures of eleven wickets for 112 runs). Set only 73 to win, the Gentlemen struggled, losing their first three wickets for only six runs, but were eventually seen home by Edward McCormick (25no) ending 75/9 with one wicket to spare. The scorecard depicts each innings on an individual page, interspersed with copious local advertising throughout. To the centre pages are batting and bowling averages for the participating players. 4”x6.5”. Originally from the collection of James Phillips (Sussex 1871-1886). Rusting to staple, nick to front cover with creasing to one corner, minor foxing, otherwise in good condition.
