‘Sussex v. Cambridge University’ 1891. Early original double sided scorecard with complete printed scores for another remarkable match played at The County Ground, Hove, 18th- 20th June 1891. The same fixture the previous season had produced the highest aggregate score in a first-class match with a total of 1339 runs. Remarkably, this match eclipsed this with 1402 runs scored. The only difference being that this time the outcome was a much closer affair, each of the innings totalling less than 400, and only one century was scored. Cambridge University elected to bat first and posted 359, Edward Streatfeild top scorer with 98, Walter Humphreys takings 5/105. In reply, Sussex reached 314, Billy Newham scoring 95 and George Brann 88no, with F.S. Jackson taking 5/102. In the second innings Cambridge made 366, Ledger Hill scoring 61, Sammy Woods (62) and Digby Jephson (36no) sharing a last wicket stand of 99. Set 412 to win, the Sussex middle order got them close with two partnerships of 120, Newham scoring 51, George Brann 161, and Walter Andrews 56. However they fell short being dismissed for 363, Cambridge winnings by 48 runs. Printed by Crowhurst of Brighton. 5”x7.5”. Local advertising to verso. Minor foxing and age toning, otherwise in good/ very good condition.
