‘Stoolball Match (Probably the Second for 200 years in London)’. Lord’s 1918. Rare official scorecard for a stoolball match played at Lord’s, 18th May 1918. The card lists the names of the players, ‘(Most of whom have not seen or heard of the Game before this month nor played it till to-day)’, for Sir H. Mackinnon’s Team and Major Grantham’s Team, both comprising eleven men and women per side. Mackinnon’s Team scored 77 in their only innings, and Grantham’s team 143. To verso, printed ‘Notes on the Game’ describing the origins of stoolball, ‘considered the origin of Cricket’, referred to in the ‘Doomsday [sic] book’, playing conditions and equipment used. Minor wear, some adhesive marks to verso, slight uneven trimming to edges, otherwise in good condition.
Stoolball is thought to have originated in Sussex and continues to be played in leagues in Sussex, Kent, Surrey and the Midlands.
