England v South Africa 1924. Original commemorative silk scorecard for the 1st Test played at Edgbaston, 14th- 17th June 1924. England were put in to bat and scored 438 with five batsmen scoring over fifty (Hobbs 76, Sutcliffe 64, Woolley 64, Hendren 74 and Kilner 59), George Parker taking 6/152. South Africa were then bowled out for only 30 in under thirteen overs, no batsman reaching double figures, the top scorer being eleven extras. Arthur Gilligan took six wickets for seven runs off 6.3 overs, Maurice Tate with four for twelve off six overs. Following on, South Africa reached a respectable 390 (Bob Catterall 120) but this was not enough to prevent defeat by an innings and 18 runs. Sutcliffe, Chapman, Kilner and Tate made their England Test debuts in this match. Printed by A.G. Barclay of Birmingham. 5.5”x8.75”.Lightly laid to black page. Very good condition. Sold with three further official scorecards, each with printed and/ or handwritten scores. One for the 2nd Test at Lord’s, which England won by the same margin of an innings and 18 runs, England amassing a total of 531/2 declared in their only innings, Hobbs scoring 211, Sutcliffe 122, Woolley 134no, and Hendren 50no. The others are for the 4th Test at Old Trafford, and the 5th Test at Kennington Oval, both matches drawn. Odd faults, otherwise in good condition. Qty 4.
England won the series 3-0 with two matches drawn.
