‘Amateur Sport. A Weekly Journal Devoted to Cricket, Football, Cycling, Lawn- Tennis &c., &c.’ Volume I, 1889 (only year of issue). Published in Bristol by J.W. Arrowsmith. Complete run of issue nos. 1-26, 24th April- 16th October 1889 bound in contemporary maroon cloth with gilt title to spine. The first fourteen issues with masthead illustration depicting a cricket scene and figures of W.G. Grace and a footballer to either side. Good cricket content with strong Gloucestershire and West Country coverage. The final issue (no. 26) states ‘Bristol is, unfortunately, not much given to sport during the winter months... This number, then, is the last of the season; and the second volume will be commenced in the spring of 1890’. No evidence exists that a second volume was published, and the periodical is not listed in the British Library. Previously sold as lot 175 in the Guy Curry sale held by Christies in May 2006. Ownership name in pencil of ‘W.R. Straker’ to front endpaper. Minor wear to the board extremities, otherwise in good/ very good condition. A rare magazine.
