‘The Rise, Progress, & Vicissitudes of Cricket in Herefordshire since its introduction to the county’. Reprinted from the Hereford Times, Hereford 1874. 62pp. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt title to front cover. Ownership name and inscription in black ink to front endpaper of R.[?].H. Rhodes, dated 1878, and further inscription in pencil to inside front cover, ‘Given by Heaton Rhodes to F. Wilding, June 1939’. Padwick 2035. Breaking to front internal hinge, minor wear to board extremities, otherwise in good/ very good condition. Not previously seen by the auctioneer.
It is probable that the ownership name of Rhodes refers to Sir Robert Heaton Rhodes, a New Zealand politician and lawyer who attended Hereford Cathedral College and graduated from Oxford University in 1884.
