Leicestershire Ladies C.C. 1930-1951. ‘Historic Ladies Matches’. A nicely presented file comprising original handwritten reports, letters, newspaper cuttings, handbill, scorecard etc. plus facsimile copies of autographs, photographs and further cuttings, all relating to the formation and development of Leicester Ladies C.C. from 1930 to 1951. Contents include an original single page report handwritten in ink by S.C. Packer, former Secretary of Leicestershire C.C.C., titled ‘Womens Cricket Then and Now’, from a meeting for the formation of ‘the first recognised women’s cricket club’ on 23rd April 1930 at the ‘County Ground Pavilion at the now derelict or deserted ground [Aylestone]’, and additional pages handwritten in pencil reporting on the ‘The second meeting... held on May 8th’. Further contents include facsimile copies of press cuttings, Club Rules, photographs and an autograph page signed by members of ‘The First Ladies County Match. Leicester Ladies v Notts Ladies on County Cricket Ground, Leicester Mon. August 4th 1930’. Also original handwritten letters and a telegram from players to Packer accepting invitations to play in the match v Warwickshire at Hinckley, 13th August 1932, also player availability, travel arrangements to matches, payment of expenses etc. Correspondents include Megan Lowe, Muriel Lowe, Mary Salt, Irene Harris, Dorothy Tipping etc. Other contents include an original handbill and scorecard for the ‘Women’s Cricket Match, England versus The Rest’ played at Grace Road, Leicester 29th July 1933, the first time an Women’s team played as ‘England’, featuring Betty Snowball and Molly Hide who scored 99 in England’s only innings. Later items include an original fixture card for the 1951 season, a handwritten letter inviting the visiting West Indian team to ‘tea & supper’, a seven page handwritten history of ladies cricket by Packer etc. A very interesting record of the early development of Women’s cricket. Very good condition.
