Samuel Meston’s ‘Special Selected’ Breeden Bat 1906. The bat by W.J. Breeden of Leyton, Essex. Impressed to the front shoulders ‘W.J. Breeden’, across the splice ‘Special Selected’ and ‘Leyton Essex’, below ‘Roberts Bristol’ and ‘Extra Spring’. The back shoulder inscribed in ink ‘S.P. Meston 1906’, the inscription barely legible, affected by what appears to be a large scorch mark. The back is steeply rounded rather than ridged, falling away to the toe, the shoulders sloping. The bound handle appears to comprise three shaped canes at the front, one at the back, with rubber insert between. The original rubber grip perished and partly lacking. The bat measures 34.25”, weighing 2lbs 6oz. Cracking and small loss to the face, scorch mark to the back, otherwise in good condition. Sold with the late vendors research notes giving further information on the bat.
Samuel Paul Meston (Gloucestershire & Essex 1906-1908) is known to have placed a special order for this bat with the retailer, Roberts of Bristol. W.J. Breeden traded from a shop in High Road, Leyton for one hundred years from 1878 until its closure in 1978.
