A Jack Hobbs ‘Oval’ bat 1922. The Harrow sized bat face impressed to both shoulders ‘Jack Hobbs Ltd, 59 Fleet Street, London’, across the splice in a roundel ‘Specially Selected’, and below at an angle ‘The Oval’, ‘Specially Selected’ and the impressed signature ‘J.B. Hobbs’. On the back to one shoulder a handwritten ownership name in ink of J. Boarde, Spillay C.C., and to the other shoulder the ink signature of Hobbs, ‘Harrow’ impressed below the splice. The bat would have been bought from Hobbs’ shop as all bats sold were signed by Hobbs, but the bat maker is unknown. The back of the blade is steeply ridged. The handle is formed from one split cane with three strips of rubber inserted. The bat measures 33.25” and weighs 1lb 15oz. Sold with the late vendors research notes giving further information on the bat.
John Berry ‘Jack’ Hobbs (Surrey & England 1905-1934) bought his Fleet Street shop from the proceeds of his benefit match of 1919. He and his son, ‘Young Jack’, ran it for some fifty years before relocating to Islington. Hobbs marketed ‘The Oval’ bat from 1922, which was so popular it was still his leading brand in 1939.
