Royman Browne. Cricket artist and illustrator. Five small original pen and ink cartoons by Browne, each on small card laid to larger white sheet with handwritten caption below. Subjects are an umpire with devil’s horns and breathing smoke walking past a left handed batsman, captioned ‘Umpires have a great distaste of deformed cricketers who bat the wrong way round!’. A pair of illustrations mounted together, of batsmen, one walking off the pitch, stumps splayed in the background, the other with arms folded and legs crossed, with captions ‘A Gentleman walks when he thinks he is out’ and ‘Others stay where they are- and hope’. A headless batsman pointing accusedly, ‘Just one more of those, chum, and I’ll come down here and knock your block off...!’. A batsman sitting on the ground in pain clutching his nether regions, ‘I’ll walk, when I physically can!’. Sold with two further printed cuttings of cartoons similarly laid down. Originally from the collection of Gordon Ross, editor of Playfair Cricket Monthly. Very good condition.
Royman Browne produced many cartoons and illustrations for Playfair Cricket Monthly in the 1950/60s.
