The Ashes. Australia ‘Coronation Tour’ to England 1953. An excellent collection of over one hundred and thirty original mono press photographs and the odd postcard including match action, player portraits, official team photographs, crowd scenes, on board ship, functions etc. Images of the Australians include a youthful Richie Benaud in the nets, Keith Miller in batting and bowling action, player portraits of Graeme Hole, Alan Davidson, Arthur Morris, Neil Harvey, Lindsay Hassett, Ron Archer, Ian Craig, Gil Langley, Ray Lindwall, the Australian touring party on board the ‘Orcades’, arriving at Waterloo station, Archer and Ring selecting Stuart Surridge bats, walking on to the field for the opening tour match at Worcester, inspecting a ‘soaked’ Lord’s wicket, the team being presented to The Queen at Lord’s, watching the tennis at Wimbledon, Hassett addressing the press on board the Strathaird prior to their departure etc. England players featured include Hutton and Yardley inspecting the wet pitch at Trent Bridge, captains Hutton and Hassett with the groundsman at Trent Bridge, Wardle and Evans leaving the field to an ovation at the close of the drawn second Test at Lord’s, England taking the field at Trent Bridge and Old Trafford, Edrich and Compton making their way through a vast crowd on the pitch at The Oval, and Hutton and Hassett shaking hands on the balcony at the conclusion of the Oval Test. Other good general views include large queues outside Lord’s, boys attempting to gain access to The Oval by climbing a lamppost, tour match in progress at East Molesey, boys standing in the pouring rain by the stands at Old Trafford etc. Photographers/agencies include Herald-Sun, Sport & General, P.A./ Reuter, Daily Sketch, Fox, Topical, Associated Press, Central Press etc. Various sizes ranging from 15”x12” and smaller. Some images with press masking, oversize images folded, other odd faults, otherwise in good condition.
With the first four Tests drawn, England won the deciding match at The Oval by eight wickets to take the series 1-0, so regaining The Ashes for the first time since the infamous 1932/33 ‘Bodyline’ series.
