‘The Cricketer’s Companion; containing the scores of the principal matches of cricket, played at Lord’s and other grounds in the Season 1846’. William Denison. Published by Simpkin, Marshall & Co., London 1847. 16mo. 108pp plus advertising. Nicely bound in later full green leather, gilt title ‘Denison’s Cricketer’s Companion 1847’ to front, raised bands to spine, original paper wrappers retained. Padwick 1068. Minor wear and soiling to original wrappers, light foxing to page edges, otherwise a good copy of a rare book.
William Denison is an important figure in cricket history, as he was the first true cricket journalist, reporting on matches for several newspapers all over the country and printing them in annuals such as this. Post Britcher, pre Wisden.
