‘Lambert’s Cricketer’s Guide or Instructions and Rules, for playing the Noble Game of Cricket...’. William Lambert. Sussex Press, Lewes. First Edition second issue 1816. Printed and published by J. Baxter. ‘Illustrated by an Elegant Copper-Plate Engraving’. 55pp. Bound in later full maroon leather, gilt title to spine, original stiffened paper wrappers retained. Includes the folded frontispiece engraving of the ‘Cricketing’ scene, with a match in progress in the Paddock, a field below Lewes Castle, with a key to fielding positions. Ownership name of ‘James John Winter’ neatly annotated in ink to title page. Padwick 383. Some wear to the original wrappers, minor age toning internally otherwise in remarkably good condition.
Roger Hancock, in his ‘A Handbook for William Lambert’s Guide’, states that only twelve authenticated editions contain a date of issue in the particulars of the book. This copy is undated but annotated in pencil ‘1816’ to the title page suggesting it is a first edition second issue.
