‘At Play, Cricket’. Rare and attractive American cricket handkerchief, c.1870/80s, with delightful scenes of boys playing cricket. Cotton handkerchief with large printed image to centre of two boys playing the game holding bats at the wicket. Further images of the game to right and left quarters of the handkerchief with captions, ‘Well Caught’, ‘Fielding’, ‘The New Bat’ and ‘After Play’. The handkerchief predominately coloured in red and black with decorative border surround. To top border of surround is the makers name ‘S.H. Greene & Sons. Washington’. 12.5”x12.5”. Minor staining and slight fraying to edges, otherwise in good/very good condition with bright original colour. An attractive period image.
The firm of S.H. Greene & Sons of Washington, U.S.A. was founded in Warwick, Rhode Island in 1865 and finally went into receivership in 1925.
