‘The Diary of Henry Teonge, Chaplain on board his Majesty’s Ships Assistance, Bristol, and Royal Oak: Anno 1675-1679. Now published from the original MS’. Henry Teonge. Printed for Charles Knight, first edition London 1825. Bound in grey boards with green cloth spine, title label to spine. Hand made paper, edges untrimmed. Includes an original fold-out of a sample page from the manuscript to front of book. This was the first publication of a manuscript kept by a member of a Warwickshire family, and preserved in their archives. The entry for May 6th 1676 on p.159 has an extremely early mention of cricket, ‘The ship was docked at Aleppo (in present day Syria) and the chaplain and about 40 others rode out of the city ‘to recreate themselves’. They participated in ‘severall pastimes and sports, as duck-hunting, fishing, shooting, handball, krickett, scrofilo...’. Bookplate of William Asheton Tonge to inside front cover. Padwick 851.
