England v Scotland 1889. Excellent early original sepia photograph of the England team depicted wearing football attire, some with England international caps, seated and standing on the steps of the pavilion at Kennington Oval for the match v Scotland 13th April 1889. Six of the England players, including their captain, Percy Walters, are wearing their international caps, each with the date they were awarded embroidered to the peak. The latest appears to be ‘1887-8’. Measuring 12.5”x10.25”, the photograph is laid to a large album page, overall 16.5”x12”. Photographer unknown. To the verso is another, smaller, England team photograph of the period, year not known. Small nick to left edge of the main photograph. Some tears to the edges of the album page, not affecting the main image. Small tear to top corner of the smaller image to the back. Otherwise in good/ very good condition.
This was the last international match England played at The Oval. England led 2-0 at half time but Scotland came back in the second half to win 3-2.

At the instigation of N. Lane ‘Pa’ Jackson of the Football Association, international caps were first awarded in 1886, with a different coloured caps issued according to the opposition played, with the year of the match embroidered on the peak.
