‘Sussex v Surrey at Brighton 1855. Very early double sided scorecard printed by ‘Lillywhite’s Printing Tent for the match played at the Royal Brunswick Ground, Hove on the 25th & 26th June 1855. The scorecard showing the fully completed printed scores for the match. Below are printed an advertisement for Lillywhite’s Printing Tent’ and coloured prints of the United All England Eleven. To verso a full page advert for ‘Lillywhite, Islington’ selling cricket equipment and also ‘Lillywhite’s Guide to Cricketers’. Players featured include Dean, Wisden, John Lillywhite, James Lillywhite Senior, Box, Napper for Sussex and Lockyer, Caffyn, Mortlock, Southerton, Sherwin, Miller, Martingell for Surrey etc. The scorecard measures 3.5”x4.75”. Odd very minor faults, minor age toning otherwise in remarkably good condition for its age. A rare scorecard
In a tight match, Sussex won by two runs, Wisden top scored for the home side with 23 out of a total of 70, In reply Surrey made 93 with Caffyn top scoring with 33, Sussex then made 127 with John Lillywhite and John Wisden making 40 and 45no before Surrey were bowled out for 102. Martingell took nine wickets in the match, Sherman eight, Wisden and Dean took six wickets each for Sussex
