South Africans won the tour match by 94 runs. In a low scoring match, Murray Bisset made 25 and 49, Shalders 51 but Kotze was the match winning player taking 7-31 in the first innings and 3-51 in the second giving him match figures of 10 wickets for 82.South Africa played 15 first-class cricket matches and 10 other matches during their visit. Although a number of matches played by South Africa during the 1880s and 1890s were retrospectively granted Test cricket status, as the 1901 touring side was not a truly representative South African side chosen by the South African Cricket Union and was a private venture organised by J.D. Logan, they did not compete in any Test matches. The South Africans were captained by Murray Bisset. The tour went ahead despite the ongoing Boer War, which suspended first-class cricket in South Africa between 1899 and 1902
