Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji. Cambridge University, Sussex, London County & England 1893-1920. Original sepia studio portrait photograph of Ranjitsinhji seated with four others. Ranji is depicted wearing a suit and turban, cigarette in his left hand, and his pet parrot ‘Popsey’ perched on his right arm. A lady seated beside Ranji has her pet dog on her lap. The photograph, by Bourne & Shepherd, India, measures 7.75”x11.5”, laid to trimmed official photographer’s mount, overall 9”x13.5”. Minor staining, otherwise in good condition. A good image.
Ranji acquired Popsey (or Popsy) the parrot while at Cambridge University in 1892 and they remained close companions for some forty years. She outlived Ranji who died in 1933 with some newspapers reporting her to be aged around 116 years old at the time!
