Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji. Cambridge University, Sussex, London County & England 1893-1920. Three page folded letter on The Frederick Hotels Ltd. official headed note paper, handwritten in ink by Ranji to F.E. Lacey, Secretary of the M.C.C. The letter with good cricket content is undated, but assumed to be 24th June 1903 as Ranji had been invited to play for M.C.C. v Cambridge University at Lord’s on 25th & 26th June. Ranji writes to say ‘I received a word late last night on my return from the theatre asking me to play at Brighton [for Sussex] as they are likely to be short and I fear Charles [C.B.] Fry is not playing as well’. Ranji is concerned that without his own and Fry’s appearance at Brighton, the gate receipts would suffer. He continues, ‘please let me know at once so then I can catch my train for Brighton that is provided you can fill my place conveniently... I shall be most happy to play Gents v Players match as per invitation you sent out’. Signed ‘Sincerely yours in haste, Ranjitsinhji’. Ex Roger Mann collection. Light fold, otherwise in very good condition.
It transpired that Fry was able to play for Sussex, and Ranji fulfilled the fixtures for M.C.C. against Cambridge University (where he captained and scored 88) and also for the Gentlemen v Players match 6th- 8th July.
