‘North v. South’ 1869. Early single sided scorecard with decorative engraved header depicting a cricket scene, for the match played at Canterbury 9th- 10th August 1869. Dated ‘Monday, August 9th’ the scorecard with complete printed scores. The North scored 107 and 154, in reply The South scored 83 and 179/2 to win by eight wickets. Players include A.N. Hornby, G. Summers, T. Bignall, R.A.H. Mitchell, F. Wyld, W. Price, A. Appleby, W. McIntyre, G. Wootton, J.C. Shaw (North), W.G. Grace, H. Jupp, G.F. Grace, E.W. Pooley, C.I. Thornton, E. Willsher, J. Southerton (South) etc. Printer’s name to lower border illegible. Formerly the property of James Phillips (Sussex 1871-1886). Ex Roger Mann collection. 4.5”x6.25”. Minor creasing and staining, otherwise in good condition.
Scheduled for three days but completed in two, J.C. Shaw (Nottinghamshire 1865-1875) took 8/20 in the South’s first innings, including clean bowling both W.G. and G.F. Grace for ducks. He also claimed W.G.’s wicket in the second innings, but Grace had scored 96!
