‘North v. South’ 1888. Early original double sided folding scorecard for the match played at the Central Recreation Ground, Hastings, 13th- 15th September 1888. The scorecard with complete printed scores in which South batted first and scored 258 (W.W. Read 96, W.G. Grace 44), with North restricted to 187 (J.A. Dixon 53). In the second innings South made 206 (K.J. Key 79no) setting North 278 to win. Led by 91 from William Gunn, the North fought hard to stave off defeat, but with only minutes left, Bobby Abel held a catch to dismiss Sherwin, The South winning by 47 runs. Pencil annotation reads ‘Finish’d 3rd day at 2 minutes to 6’. Printed by F.J. Parsons, Observer Office, Hastings. 12.5”x6.5”. Formerly the property of James Phillips (Sussex 1871-1886), whose brother, Henry, played in this match. Advertising to front and verso for local businesses. Ex Roger Mann collection. This was the second year of the Hastings & St. Leonards Cricket Festival which continued to run until the 1960s.
