James Lillywhite jun. Sussex & England 1862-1883. Single page handwritten letter with good cricket content in ink from Lillywhite to an unknown correspondent, dated 23rd September 1913. Writing from his home in Westerton, Chichester, Lillywhite is replying to a request to identify players in a group photograph. ‘The group you mean was no doubt taken in 1869 when the South of England 11 paid a visit there [Jersey?]. The rest of the men you do not recognise I expect were Jupp, Charles, Payne, and Charlwood, made up with T. Hearne, Griffith, Mortlock, T. Humphrey, Southerton, Pooley, Caesar or H.H. Stephenson, John & James Lillywhite’. He closes by stating he hasn’t a copy of the photo, ‘but if you care to send yours along I should be sure to know each one’. Nicely signed ‘Jas Lillywhite’. The letter, with light horizontal fold, is laid to trimmed page with adhesive marks to verso. Good condition.
James Lillywhite captained England in the very first two Test matches played, in Australia in 1876/77. He played 157 matches for Sussex and went on many overseas tours. His final match was for Lord Sheffield’s XI in 1885. He went on to be a first-class umpire, standing in six Test matches. Lillywhite died in Westerton in 1929.
