‘Sussex County XI (1900)’. Ruled page extract from the visitors’ book of The Assize Courts Hotel, Manchester, very nicely signed in black ink by the eight professional players who took part in the drawn match v Lancashire at Old Trafford 5th- 7th July 1900. Each player has signed with their nickname in brackets alongside. Signatures are Cyril Bland (nickname ‘wiv ye’), Harry Butt (‘Father’[?]), Fred Tate (‘Beery’[?]), Joe Vine (‘Jigger’), E.H. Killick (‘Tim’), George Cox (‘Doodle’), and Albert Relf (‘Bartie’). Also signed by W.H. Edwards, scorer and manager. Annotation below reads ‘Every attention, & everything of the best to come & may all of the above visit this Hotel for years in the work of the above’ and, below that, another, presumably a guest at the hotel, writes ‘I heartily endorse the above’. The verso is additionally signed by seven members of the Middlesex team of 1900, J.E. West, W. Roche, A.E. Trott, J.T. Rawlin, J.T. Hearne etc. and three ‘Somerset Flirters’, E.J. Tyler, E. Robson and one other. The page measures 7”x7.75”. Some age toning and soiling, nick to edge, otherwise in good condition. Nice signatures.
As was common practice of the time, the three Sussex amateurs, Ranjitsinhji, Brann and Collins would have stayed in a different (probably better!) hotel.
