‘Grand Return Match. Kent and Sussex’ 1871. Early original double sided scorecard with complete printed scores for the match played at Mote Park, Maidstone, 13th- 15th July 1871. Sussex (65 & 156) beat Kent (62 & 56) by 103 runs). Annotation in ink in the hand of Sussex’s James Phillips, ‘J.P.’s 2nd County match. Shd. not have played having injured hand caused day before at Northiam’. Opening the batting in both innings, Phillips scored only 1 & 4. Southerton (eleven wickets in the match) and Lillywhite (eight) bowled unchanged in both innings for Sussex. For Kent, Southerton took ten wickets in the match and Willsher nine. In a low scoring match, James Lillywhite top scored with 55no in Sussex’s second innings. Printed on the ground by Dickinson’s Press, Maidstone. Local advertising to verso. 6”x9”. Ex James Phillips collection. Horizontal folds with some splitting, wear to corners, age toning, otherwise in generally good condition.
Phillips had made his first-class debut in the corresponding match at Hove the previous month.
